Loot boxes are containers players can open to obtain a randomized item, usually a cosmetic skin or a character. They are the digital equivalent to baseball card packs. Loot boxes are psychologically similar to gambling and can lead to problematic gambling behavior, especially for adolescents. Despite its similarities to gambling, loot boxes are not federally regulated in the United States. Other countries like Denmark and Norway have banned them for violating their gambling laws.
